Controller

This is a new position at our agency and we are looking for an experienced non-profit financial leader to help us build finance team capacity as we continue to grow our coalition.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A hands-on, customer service-oriented approach and a willingness to pitch in to deliver high quality services and data on-time.
  • A leader who is willing to change and grow with the agency; experience building team capacity and cross-training staff is a must.
  • A successful track record motivating a team to efficiently deliver meaningful financial reports, clean audits and good stewardship of public funds.
  • Strong non-profit accounting skills and great business instincts to efficiently deliver a complete, accurate and informative general ledger each month. Experience and comfort problem solving with complex non-profit allocation methods and compliance reporting are a must. A CPA license or a seasoned CPA candidate with experience in a variety of settings is strongly preferred.
  • Experience and aptitude for mapping, trouble-shooting and reporting complex financial transactions involving integration tools, multiple databases and funder-specific tracking requirements. The ability to create ad hoc tracking tools, custom designed reports and pivot-tables is essential. Experience using Abila MIP, ADP and other Payroll Software, Tableau, Access, Share Point, Box or Citrix Cloud Based applications is a plus.

Job Summary:

The Controller is responsible for the accounting function of the Coalition. The position prepares and analyzes financial reports, maintains internal accounting records, manages government grants and provides accounting oversight to staff to ensure that the accounting records are in compliance with all mandated regulations. The position performs complex and highly responsible work assisting the Chief Administrative Officer in administering and maintaining the accounting function of the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the reporting and internal accounting records of the organization, including general ledger maintenance, journal entries, balance sheet and expense statements
  • Oversees cash receipts, cash disbursements and banking.
  • Oversees cost allocations for all internal expenses, subcontractors and outside service providers, including monthly cost accounting, analysis, adjustments and transfers
  • Supervises a team performing all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll. Ensures proper segregation of duties, cross-training and professional development in accordance with internal controls, best practices and the best interests of the Coalition.
  • Manages external audits and funder fiscal monitoring reviews.
  • Ensures that all funders’ fiscal requirements are met and reports are submitted accurately and on time
  • Issues timely, complete and meaningful financial statements
  • Involved in oversight of annual budget and forecasts
  • Manage accuracy of day to day activities/operations
  • Continually looks for ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Makes recommendation for process improvement and capacity building and carries out solutions.
  • Performs related duties as required
  • Supervises 3-5 staff

Education & Experience Required:

  • Master’s Degree in Accounting or Business
  • CPA license or CPA candidate within 1 year of completion preferred
  • 7 years of non-profit finance or accounting experience with increasing responsibility
  • 5 years of federal, state and local government grant funding experience.
