The A’s of Addressing Behavior - Part 2

About the Event

Please contact elcbtraining@elcbroward.org if you have questions or need assistance.

This is the second session in a two-part training series. Participants have to register for and attend both sessions in order to receive a certificate of participation with in-service hours.

This presentation focuses on the use of positive discipline in the early childhood education settings. The definition and types of discipline are reviewed as well as their short and long term impacts. Educators are provided with specific strategies to prevent challenging behavior as well as those to intervene when it presents, in order to encourage cooperation and compliance, and as well strengthen children’s capacity to be well-adjusted. In addition to strategies for the general use of positive discipline, specific strategies are also discussed to manage common early childhood challenges such as tantrums, hitting and biting, and peer conflict.

By the end of this training, participants will:
1. Define attachment and name the 4 components of attachment
2. Identify two ways in which secure and insecure attachment impact children’s short and long term well-being
3. Describe the role early childhood educators play as attachment figures and two ways they can engage with children to support secure attachment and manage separation anxiety
4. Describe the tenants of positive discipline and the short and long-term effects on children’s mental health and well-being
5. Identify 3 strategies for preventing unwanted behavior in young children as well as 3 strategies to intervene when unwanted behavior occurs
