“If you give a child a book…” Book Giveaway!

WSFL-TV - Scripps Howard Foundation - Early Learning Coalition of Broward County

WSFL-TV (Channel 39: The CW) partnered with the Early Learning Coalition of Broward County (ELC Broward) for the “If You Give a Child a Book…” campaign with the Scripps Howard Foundation to fundraise and purchase NEW books for kids in our community. Employees at the TV station, along with their viewers raised over $10,700 to purchase almost 1,100 books for kids in Broward County.

As part of the book campaign, on Tuesday, January 19,  ELC Broward and WSFL-TV surprised the students at Itsy Bitsy Kids Preschool in Tamarac with gift bags containing two books and a family activity guide for each of the children there. The Book Giveaway event was covered by WSFL-TV for their local news show and featured an interview with Chief Executive Officer of the Early Learning Coalition of Broward County, Renee Jaffe, the child care program director Ruth Gonzalez and parents to discuss the benefits of early literacy and boosting book ownership for families.

“We’re so elated to have this opportunity to team up with WSFL-TV and Scripps Howard Foundation,” says Renee Jaffe, CEO of ELC Broward. Studies show parents and/or caregivers who read to their child at an early age, even as early as infancy, can have a positive impact on a child’s self-confidence and learning outcomes. We know that getting books into the hands of young children and having them read to them is going to better set them up for lifelong success. We’re proud to be part of this effort and will continue to find innovative ways to build a strong literacy foundation for young children across Broward County.”

Throughout the rest of the month, ELC Broward staff will be delivering books to more than 500 children in early learning centers throughout Broward County – to spark the love of reading to our youngest learners and their families.
